BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Aging and other health issues can cause our bodies to stop producing hormones at appropriate levels. When this happens, many troubling symptoms can occur. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a method of replacing those hormones with hormones that are the exact chemical structure as the hormones that your body once produced.
What are the benefits?
When your hormones are well-balanced you will experience better energy levels, improved mood, mental clarity, enhanced libido and easier weight loss. You will also have less bone loss. You should experience relief from the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.
Is it safe?
There are many benefits to hormone replacement therapy, and when given in the right dose to the right patient it is very safe. Your health care providers will closely evaluate your individual test results to determine if BHRT is right for you.
What hormones are tested?
Estrogen, Testosterone, Progesterone, DHEAS, Cortisol, Melatonin and key metabolites of these hormones are tested.
What costs are involved with BHRT?
You will take a lab test before beginning any medications. Insurance typically covers this test with a minimal copay. If you have no insurance the cost of the test is $250. The average cost of prescriptions for BHRT ranges from $35-$85 per month, depending on what medications you need. We will attempt to bill your insurance for these medications, but many times the medications are not covered.
How do I get my hormones tested?
The first thing you will need to do is obtain a prescription from your provider for “Hormone Testing” and bring it to us. If you do not have a provider, we can help to guide you to one. We will provide you with the appropriate test (urine or saliva) and go over it with you in the pharmacy. You will complete the test at home.
How long does it take for my results to come back?
Typically results are back to us within 2-3 weeks.
Can you mail my prescriptions to me?
Yes. If you live within the state of Alabama or Georgia, we can mail your prescriptions to you. There is typically a $5.00 shipping charge. This is subject to change depending on what is being mailed and where it is being mailed to.
Once we receive your results, our on-staff hormone expert, Catherine Henderson PharmD ABAAHP, will review them and make recommendations for treatment. In order to fill any prescriptions, we must have approval from your provider. We will send the results and recommendations to your provider and they can either sign off on them or make changes to them. Once approved, we can make your medications specifically for you.
