Modern medicine has made many advances for our quality of life, but those advances have also come at a cost. For instance, I’m thankful for the availability of antibiotics-- but I hope I don’t ever have to take them! Antibiotics are literally life-saving when they are truly needed, but when they are overused (as they are in our current culture) they lead to the formation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (i.e. really bad bugs!!). But this is just one example of where modern medicine is leading us.
Modern medicine has also taken the responsibility for good health out of the hands of the patient and placed it in the hands of the health care practitioner (physician, nurse practitioner, etc). Many of the home remedies that were passed down for generations as common knowledge have been lost as people have chosen to take prescription medications for whatever ails them. Have a headache? Take some acetaminophen, nevermind your liver.
But what about all those old home remedies? Did you know there is a movement to bring them back into the mainstream? Unless you’ve been living under a rock you have probably seen LOTS of people promoting essential oils. In 2015, one prominent company reported over $1 billion in sales of essential oils. It is also predicted that by 2022 the sales for the essential oil industry may reach as high as $11 billion. So why is everyone going crazy for oils? Here is your quick primer on benefits of essential oils:
1. You are borrowing the immune system of the plant. Just think of how cool that is!Plants can’t take medicine so God has given them these amazing chemicals to help them repel bugs and bacteria, to heal wounds to their bark and leaves, to grow and flourish. Doesn’t it make sense that those chemicals could help us do the same?
2. They can improve your mood. Plain and simple, we all intuitively know that we get a boost in our mood from time spent with nature, and we also know that certain scents are uplifting. So, even when you are stuck inside your dull office you can diffuse essential oils and be just a little closer to nature.
3. They are backed by research. There is actually a large amount of data that supports the use of essential oils for various conditions from simple skin issues to cancer. Now, because they are not regulated by the FDA, I can’t recommend that you use essential oils medically-- but I can tell you to look into the studies that are out there about essential oils. Practice caution when using essential oils, because they are certainly strong and when used incorrectly they can be harmful.
